This year, Burkinabe farmers are facing an increase in the price of mineral fertilizer. Depending on the city, the price of a 50-kilo bag varies between 34,000 and 37,500 FCFA , whereas in previous years the price was set between 15,000 and 17,500 FCFA.
In terms of alternatives to the scarcity and inaccessibility of mineral fertilizers, soil scientists and agricultural technicians have proposed solutions such as the use of compost and dolomite. These types of fertilizers also increase soil fertility and contribute to plant nutrition. A 25-kilo bag of compost is sold for 3,000 FCFA, while a 50-kilo bag of dolomite varies between 2,500 FCFAand 3,500 FCFA, depending on the city.
Despite the existence of these solutions, farmers believe that the Ministry of Agriculture should make fertilizer available at a lower cost, because agriculture is the foundation of the economy of Burkina Faso.
