Description

In Burkina Faso, national milk production is lower than the market demand. Over the years, the need for milk has been increasing.

However, the country has enough potential to increase the level of production. According to Issa SAWADOGO, Director General of Animal Productions at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Fisheries (MARAH), their report indicates that in 2019, about 264,000 tons of milk were processed in small processing units, for a potential of over 450,000 tons.

It should be noted that the Burkinabe market is flooded with imported milk, which threatens the development of local milk. According to a study by OXFAM West Africa at the beginning of the “my milk is local” campaign, the price of milk powder is 35% cheaper than that of local milk.

This pushes consumers towards the consumption of powdered milk, which is often of poor quality.

Initiatives must be taken to support the milk sector so that it can develop along the value chain to face this competition.
