Domestic sesame production rose during the 2024–2025 agricultural season. According to data from the Burkinabe Council for Agro-Pastoral and Fisheries Sectors (CBF), it reached 376,945 tonnes, compared with 246,975 tonnes in the previous season.

This figure represents an increase of 52.51%. It is also 34.46% higher than the average recorded over the last five years, estimated at 280,340 tonnes.

According to the CBF, this growth is mainly driven by several major production areas, notably the regions of Goulmou, Bankui, Nando, Nazinon and Tannounyan.

Regarded as one of the country’s main cash crops, sesame plays a significant role in the national economy. It contributes to exports, generates income for producers and helps bring foreign currency into Burkina Faso.

The Burkinabe Council for Agri-Pastoral and Fisheries Sectors attributes these results to the measures taken to better organise and professionalise the sector. The institution states that it will continue to support producers, processors and traders in order to improve the sector’s competitiveness, enhance product quality and promote sustainable development for the benefit of rural communities.

Furthermore, for the 2025–2026 marketing year, the minimum farm-gate price per kilogramme of sesame has been set at 535 CFA francs.
