Burkina Faso: The Sahelian woodland to regenerate arid lands

Description

In Burkina Faso, the Zoramb Naagtaaba Association (AZN) is at the origin of the Sahelian woodland. This is a balanced ecosystem created by man, combining trees, crops and livestock. Thanks to this approach, lands that were once arid and infertile are now transformed into veritable green oases.

The Sahelian woodlands are landscaped and protected by wire fences, which protect the crops from damage caused by animals.

To encourage soil regeneration, cultivation practices such as “zaï” are used. Zaï consists of digging holes in the fields and adding organic manure to retain run-off water.

Sophie SAMPEBGO, a farmer, says: “Since our fields have been fenced in, it has helped us a lot, because before, we couldn’t harvest much because of the animals”.
