The Minister of State for Agriculture, Ismaël SOMBIÉ, carried out a site visit to Badara on 18 May 2026 to inspect the progress of groundwater mobilisation works. Through this irrigation project led by the Dangoumana Agricultural Development Project (PDAD), the authorities aim to ensure year-round agricultural production and strengthen Burkina Faso’s food sovereignty.
This visit enabled the Minister to observe the progress made in implementing the irrigation system developed by the Dangoumana Agricultural Development Project (PDAD). This innovative system aims to ensure a continuous supply of water for farmers, with the ambition of enabling up to three growing seasons per year.
178 boreholes have already been drilled in the Guiriko and Tannounyan regions. The recorded flow rates range from 16 to 30 cubic metres of water per hour, indicating significant potential for the development of irrigated farming. In Badara, eight boreholes have been developed, with an estimated combined flow rate of 221 cubic metres per hour.
Thanks to these water facilities, farmers will be able to cultivate their land throughout the year, regardless of the rainy seasons. The crops targeted are mainly rice, wheat, tomatoes and maize, which are considered strategic for strengthening national food self-sufficiency.
The authorities believe that this project will not only help to increase agricultural yields, but also improve producers’ incomes and strengthen the agricultural sector’s resilience to the effects of climate change.
