As part of preparations for Ramadan, Niger’s Minister of Trade, Abdoulaye Seydou, visited several vegetable markets and bakeries in the city of Niamey on 1st February 2026. The aim was to ensure the availability of consumer goods and raise awareness among traders about price stability.
At vegetable markets, the minister assessed products availability and called on traders to avoid any price increases during Ramadan in order to preserve the purchasing power of the population.
The ministerial delegation also visited the local rice processing unit Adelco BM Rice, which specialises in promoting national production. On this occasion, the minister encouraged stakeholders in the sector to boost local rice production and called on consumers to give priority to products derived from national production.
Bakeries were also included in this tour. The Minister checked compliance with current standards, particularly hygiene rules, health guidelines and regulations applicable to products sold. Particular attention was paid to the quality and accessibility of bread, which is consumed in large quantities during Ramadan.
At the end of the visit, the Minister of Trade noted that there was a satisfactory supply of vegetables on the markets, with prices considered affordable overall. He urged traders to maintain this positive trend throughout the month of Ramadan. With regard to bakeries, he reiterated the importance of strict compliance with hygiene and quality standards in order to protect consumer health.
