A fire destroyed large stocks of onions on Sunday 17 May 2026 in the Tahoua region of Niger. The disaster has left dozens of vegetable producers’ families in despair, after months of hard work and sacrifice went up in smoke.
According to initial estimates, the losses are put at nearly 50 million CFA francs. At the scene, all that remains now is smouldering debris, a strong smell of burning and a heavy silence in the wake of the fire.
For the farmers, this tragedy represents much more than a material loss. Months of labour under the Sahelian sun, daily watering and investment in agricultural inputs have vanished in a matter of moments.
Alerted to the situation, the Tamaké police force and the departmental civil protection services were quickly deployed to secure the area and assess the extent of the damage.
In the face of this disaster, the local authorities have offered their moral support to the victims. They also stress the need to modernise storage infrastructure and strengthen preventive measures to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.
