Burkina Faso: Initiatives supporting local milk production

To develop the dairy sector in Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Fisheries, through its Animal Production Department, has undertaken several actions.

The Ministry is working to increase animal production by crossing local breeds with imported breeds in order to have cross-breeds capable of producing milk in large quantities. It is trying to improve their nutrition through the production of feed.

This department has launched projects such as the Support Project for the Development of the Livestock Sector in Burkina Faso (PADEL-B), which aims to develop the entire value chain. There is also the dairy development project in the peri-urban area of Ouagadougou, which aims to build a factory producing 30,000 litres of milk per day, milk collection centres and a breeding unit for performing cattle in “Komki-Ipala”.
